So… What Actually Are Drones?

Every time someone hears I’m a roboticist, I get the same two questions:

  1. “Can you build me a drone?”
  2. “Wait, what even is a drone?”

Let’s start with the second one, because honestly, that’s the more interesting question.

When most people say “drone,” they’re picturing a flying gadget with four spinning propellers, maybe carrying a GoPro, maybe annoying a seagull at the beach.

But technically, “drone” just means an unmanned system that can operate without direct human control.

That includes flying ones (UAVs), rolling ones (UGVs), floating ones (USVs), and even underwater ones (UUVs). Basically, if it moves without a pilot inside, and can make its own decisions — it’s a drone.

They’re the robotic cousins of remote-control cars, except they’ve gone through college, picked up a few algorithms, and can now navigate, stabilize, and map environments on their own.

Here’s where the nuance lives.

Not all drones are autonomous.

Some are just remote-controlled machines that rely entirely on human input.

Others are fully autonomous — capable of path planning, obstacle avoidance, and mission execution without a joystick in sight.

In robotics terms, autonomy is a sliding scale.

At one end: you’re just pushing buttons and hoping you don’t crash.

At the other: the drone’s doing SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), optimizing trajectories, and probably judging your driving skills.

The real beauty lies in that in-between zone — where humans and AI share control. The human defines intent (“map this building”), and the drone figures out how to do it efficiently and safely. It’s like teamwork, except one partner never sleeps and doesn’t complain about Wi-Fi.

So what are drones, really? They’re an intersection of control theory, sensors, autonomy, and a bit of human laziness.

We wanted to see things from the sky, so we built something that could do it for us.

We wanted faster deliveries, safer inspections, better data — so we taught machines to move through the world intelligently.

The term “drone” is just shorthand for that big, messy, and fascinating evolution of mobility and autonomy.

Next time someone asks you what a drone is, you can say:

“It’s a robot that doesn’t need a pilot.”
